Software

DAW Software

Over the years I’ve used a lot of different DAW software.  I used to use Apple exclusively and recently switched to PC.  I have to say my absolute favorite on Mac was MOTU Digital Performer but on PC hands down Cubase is the best DAW out there.  Try out some trials, find what works best with the way you think and really hunker down and learn that DAW like a tool inside and out.  DAW-hopping is for those that are silly with lots of money to burn.  Derp!

I will say that even though Avid has made good strides over the years, if you’re looking to produce electronic music I’d avoid Pro Tools.  It’s a bit of a money sink with silly arbitrary software limitations (specifically WRT channel io).  PT is great for those mixing other people and mixing alone but you’ll find a much better home with Steinberg or Ableton.

Editor/Librarian

I’m kind of surprised these aren’t more popular to be honest.  I have a lot of older synths and outboard equipment that’s MIDI capable and these tools make it a dream to work with them inside of contemporary DAWs and workflows.  I would suggest using Mystery Islands stuff if you have one or two pieces of equipment supported by their plugins (much love to Jani!), though if you have a lot of supported outboard gear then Sound Quest is worth it more for the incredible amount of device support and options for either the plugin or standalone approach.  Both developers of Mystery and SQ Pro are fantastic, worth its weight in gold to me because often times the gear I control with them are racked out of reach from my seat.

The following list of software instruments and plugins is so far from complete.  I’d really like to go through and share what I use so I promise to update it soon.
